Bird Watching at KIbale Forest National Park
Kibale Forest National Park is located in the western part of Uganda and an exceptional destination for bird watching with rare endemics that cannot be found anywhere around the world. Despite the park being known for chimpanzee trekking, the park is also ideal for birders interested in watching the vibrant species. The Park inhabits more than 370 species of bords i.e tropical rainforest birds most of which are African species.
There are also Albertine Rift Endemics which are rare and elusive including the Green-breasted Pitta, Great Blue Turaco, African Grey Parrot, Black-and-white Casqued Hornbill, Yellow-spotted Barbet & Yellow-rumped Tinkerbird, Cassin’s Spinetail, Blue-headed Bee-eater, Nahan’s Francolin, Masked Apalis as well as other bird species like the Abyssinian Ground Thrush, Western Nicator, Purple-breasted Sunbird, barbets, robins, and flycatchers.
Places to watch bird species in Kibale Forest National Park
1. Kanyanchu Area
Kanyanchu Area is the most prominent starting point in the park where Guided nature walks start around 7:00 am then embark on hikes following trails in the forest spotting forest birds both on the ground and in the canopy.
2. Sebitoli Forest
Situated in the northern part of the park, Sebitoli offers quieter trails with excellent chances of seeing birds such as the Red-headed Malimbe and Brown Illadopsis away from crowds.
3. Bigodi Wetland Sanctuary (just outside the park)
Although technically separate, Bigodi is often paired with Kibale birding itineraries. The wetlands support over 200 bird species, especially papyrus-associated birds like the Papyrus Gonolek and various marsh species.
When to Go Birdwatching
Birdwatching in Kibale is ideal annually although bird watching can take place both in the dry and wet seasons. The Best time to watch bird is during the Dry season in the months of June–August and December–February as the trails are navigable and birds can easily be seen and photographed.
The Wet season happens in the months of March–May and September–November offering views of many bird species as food is a lot and many species are fond of breeding plumage. Many migrant bird species are also abundant making photography exceptional.
Migratory Bird species are usually spotted in the months of November to April.
Birdwatching Tips in Kibale Forest National Park
Start early: the Bird watching activity usually starts in the morning hours.
Hire an experienced guide as these knowledgeable guides dramatically increase your chances of finding rarities and understanding calls.
Bring binoculars and a field guide to help you observe canopy species and identify vocal bird species.
Dress appropriately i.e neutral clothing, sturdy shoes, rain gear, and insect repellent help you stay comfortable.
Stay quiet and patient as you watch many forest bird species as you transfer from one point to another.
