Vegetation around the Park
Vegetation of Kibale Forest National Park includes botanically diverse forests in East Africa which cover about 795 km² of grasslands, swamps, and riverine vegetation. The vegetation inhabits primates, birds, insects, and other wildlife. It includes Moderate altitude (1,100–1,600 m above sea level), High annual rainfall (1,400–1,700 mm), Fertile volcanic and lateritic soils.
Major Vegetation Zones in Kibale Forest National Park include; the Evergreen Forest which includes dominant vegetation type, particularly in the central and northern parts of the park. This consists of Dense canopy with trees reaching 30–40 meters with tree species i.e Ficus species (fig trees), Pouteria altissima, Lovoa swynnertonii, Newtonia buchananii, Entandrophragma angolense (African mahogany).
Semi-Deciduous Forests which shed leaves usually and these include; Cordia millenii, Albizia species, Markhamia lutea. Grasslands and Savanna Patches which include Elephant grass (Pennisetum purpureum), Savanna grasses, Scattered shrubs and small trees. Swamps and Wetland Vegetation which include; swamps, streams, and river systems, most famously the Bigodi Wetland Sanctuary, Papyrus (Cyperus papyrus), Reeds and sedges, Raffia palms, Water-loving shrubs.
