Chimpanzee Trekking

at Kibale Forest National Park

Best Time to Visit Kibale National Park

Located in the western part of Uganda, Kibale Forest National Park is ideal for travelers interested in trekking the chimpanzees in their natural forest vegetation habitat. Trekking and encountering these can be done anytime around the year although the best time to trek the chimpanzees is during the short rain and dry season in the months of June–September and December–February.

Why this period is good to trek the Chimpanzees in the Park

  • Trekking during this period is ideal because the trails are less muddy with clearer trails
  • During this time, there is better visibility for chimpanzees
  • The Road Conditions are accessible and navigable
  • Comfortable weather (warm days, cooler mornings)
  • Rainy seasons (still you can trek the chimpanzees)
  • This happens in the months of March–May and October–November

Why trek the chimpanzees during the rainy season

  • Forest is verdant and vibrant
  • Fewer tourists (more intimate treks)
  • Excellent birdwatching
  • Often lower lodge prices
  • Best time specifically for chimpanzee trekking
  • Year-round, but easier sightings in the dry seasons
  • Chimps tend to stay closer to known feeding areas when fruit is less scattered
  • Morning treks are best any time of year.
