Chimpanzee Trekking at Kibale Forest National Park is a very prominent safari adventure carried out in the Park as you get to trek and watch the rare species of Chimpanzees. Kibale Forest National Park is located in the western part of Uganda close to Fort Portal with many habituated chimpanzees that are trekked and watched by travelers that visit the Park in Uganda. The Forest is known as the primate capital inhabiting more than 1,500 chimpanzees and 12 other primate species within its verdant tropical green forest.

Chimpanzee trekking is a guided walk through the forest to locate a habituated group of wild chimpanzees. Once found, visitors are allowed to spend one hour observing them as they feed, groom, play, hunt, and communicate. You shall watch them being mobile, energetic as they make noise through communicating.

Where Treks Begin

Most chimp treks in Kibale start at the Kanyanchu Visitor Centre where you are welcomed an dtaken through precie briefing about the conduct around the chimpanzees then later you are allocated into groups of 8 with lead park ranger guides who lead you to the starting points where you leave from to enter the forest to trek the Chimpanzees.

Chimpanzee Trekking Schedule

Chimpanzee trekking is exceptional to do for all travelers and this includes the Morning Trek which starts at 8:00 AM transferring from the Kanyanchu Visitor’s Center where you leave from to enter the green forest to trek the chimpanzees for 2 to 4 hours till you meet the primates. There is also the afternoon trek which begins around 2:00 PM till 5:00 PM.

The Chimpanzee Experience

Once trackers locate the chimpanzees you’ll observe them from a safe distance. You shall watch Mothers caring for infants, Adult males patrolling and displaying dominance, Young chimps playing, chasing, and swinging, Loud pant-hoots and screams echoing through the forest.

Chimpanzee Permits & Costs

Chimpanzee trekking permits at Kibale Forest National Park are obtained from the Uganda Wildlife Authority and cost US $250 per person for foreign non residents. Advance booking is strongly recommended especially in peak seasons (June–September, December–February).

Best Time for Chimpanzee Trekking

Chimpanzee Trekking can be done anytime around the year although the best time to trek the chimpanzees is during the short rain season in the months of

March–May & October–November as you follow through Greener forest, fewer crowds but muddier trails.

Chimpanzee Trekking Rules and Regulations

  • Maximum 6 people per chimp group
  • Visitors must be 15 years or older
  • One hour maximum with chimps
  • Maintain a 7–8 meter distance
  • No flash photography
  • Face masks may be required to reduce disease transmission

Difficulty & Fitness Level

  • Chimp trekking in Kibale is moderate:
  • Terrain: forest trails, gentle hills, occasional mud
  • Walking time varies; chimps move frequently
  • Not as strenuous as gorilla trekking, but still active
  • Porters are available and highly recommended — they help carry bags and support local livelihoods.
