Chimpanzee Trekking in Kibale National Park
Kibale National Park is located in western Uganda close to Fort Portal hence known as the primate capital of Africa due to its high diversity and primate species i.e more than 13 species including the chimpanzees.
Before You Go – Booking & Permits
A chimpanzee trekking permit is mandatory to access the forest and join a trekking group. You must secure one before your visit

Chimpanzees can be trekked anytime around the year although the best time to trek the chimpanzees is during the Dry Season when the trails are navigable and the chimpanzees can be watched.
The best months to trek and watch the chimpanzees is during the months of June to September, December to February. During these months, the Trails are less muddy and slippery making trekking the chimpanzees enjoyable as the primates are usually on or near the ground, increasing chances of sightings and clear photography.
Wet/Rainy Seasons also offer sightings despite the fact that trekking is challenging. These seasons happen in the months of March to May, October to November. During these times, the Trails are can be muddy, slippery, and more physically demanding.
Chimpanzee Trekking is a very exciting safari adventure done in Kibale Forest National Park and this offers you a chance to trek and watch the stunning chimpanzees in their natural forest vegetation habitat. Trekking the chimpanzee requires you to follow various rules and regulations to get the best encounters with these amazing primates.
- Typically, trekkers must be at least 12–15 years old to participate in chimpanzee trekking.
- You Must be in groups of about 6 people per tracking group with a lead guide and ranger.
- Keep a close distance with your official ranger guide.
- You should maintain a safe distance of at least 8–10 meters (25–33 feet) away from chimpanzees at all times.
- Keep Noise to a Minimum
- Photography & Technology Rules (flash Photography is Forbidden)
- No Eating, Smoking, or Drinking Nearby the chimpanzees
- Don’t Trek If You’re Sick
- Do not leave litter in the forest
- One-Hour Maximum is allowed in the presence of the Chimpanzees
- Once a chimpanzee group is located
