Chimpanzee Trekking vs Chimpanzee Habituation Experience

Kibale Forest National Park in western Uganda is known to offer amazing Chimpanzee Trekking adventures to all travelers on safari in Uganda. In the Park, Chimpanzee Trekking and Chimpanzee Habituation Experience are the most prominent safari adventure carried out and this offers you a chance to encounter the rare primates in their natural forest habitat.

Trekking the chimpanzees takes a period of 2 to 4 hours in groups of 8 with lead rangers and when you meet them an hour is allowed in their presence.

Chimpanzee Trekking Experience is done twice daily i.e the Morning session which starts around 7:30–8:00 AM and afternoon session which begins around 2:00 PM

Briefing & Preparation

Before entering the forest, all visitors must check in at the designated meeting point (often at Kanyanchu Visitor Centre) for a briefing by park officials. You’ll receive instructions about safety, etiquette, and how to behave around wild chimpanzees.

You’ll walk through lush rainforest, thick vines, giant trees listening to the calls of birds and other primates. Often you’ll hear the chimps long before you see them — guttural hoots and calls echo through the canopy, helping guides locate them. Along the way, you might also spot other wildlife such as:

Colobus and red-tailed monkeys, Grey-cheeked mangabeys, Tropical bird species. Once the chimpanzee community is found, your group usually limited to about 6–8 people is allowed one hour to observe them quietly. Chimps are busy animals: you’ll often watch them feeding, grooming, playing, and interacting socially.

Chimpanzee Habituation Experience

Other than chimpanzee trekking, travelers can engage in a much durable adventure known as the chimpanzee habituation experience where they transfer in groups of 4 and stay in the presence of the chimpanzees for a full day.

You shall wake up early before the chimpanzees wake up then follow them from one trail to another as they take you through their daily livelihood doing natural activities like breast feeding, foraging, communicating, patrolling, playing etc. On this adventure, you move with packed lunch as you stay with the chimpanzees till late evening.
